Avis explore the neurodivergence of mental health in their debut EP “Sunrise”

Avis is a four-piece Indie-pop band – Rymer (bass, backing vocals, drums), Jess/Sev (vocals, guitar), El Ponton (guitar, backing vocals) and Zak (drums) – hailing from Hull and East Yorkshire, and today they have released their debut 3-track EP titled “Sunrise“.

The title track, “Sunrise” opens the EP with its upbeat jangle-pop guitars that evoke a bright and optimistic mood, perfectly contrasted by the song’s lyrical themes of anxiety and learning how to navigate life’s challenges. Lead vocalist Sev’s conversation with their subconscious, exploring mental health and neurodivergence, adds a layer of depth and vulnerability that’s hard to ignore.

Copy Paste Street” the second track on the EP, presents a lyrical metaphor for the repetitive, uninspiring architecture of many residential areas in the UK that often lead to a monotonous and bland lifestyle. The song’s catchy hooks and poignant lyrics perfectly capture the sense of feeling forgotten and unimportant in a society that values conformity.

Echo Chamber” closes the 3-track EP with a melancholic groove that tells a story of ex-friends and how one of them bullied the other, leading to feelings of isolation and alienation. The song’s internal conversation between the persecuted one and their own thoughts perfectly encapsulates the emotional turmoil of bullying and its lasting impact.

The EP showcases Avis’s remarkable musicianship as young musicians, particularly in the instrumental production that combines jangle-pop guitars, melodic basslines, and dynamic drums that fuse together seamlessly to create a rich and textured sound, that’s both polished and raw and showcases their great unit. Also, it is worth noting that Sev’s vocals have an emotive quality that brings each track to life, perfectly conveying the range of emotions expressed in each song. Her ability to balance vulnerability and strength creates a captivating and memorable listening experience that leaves a lasting impression.

Avis’s “Sunrise” EP is a remarkable debut that showcases the band’s promising talent, having produced the EP with Adam Pattrick, the EP offers a distinctive sound and impressive musicianship. If this EP is any indication of what’s to come, Avis is sure to become a force to be reckoned with in the indie/bedroom pop genre.
