Prolific Australian singer, songwriter, musician, and producer Sarah Blasko has announced her first full-length studio album in six years, set for release in the first week of November, 2024. Alongside this announcement, Sarah has released the heart-wrenching album opener, “The Way”, accompanied by a music video. This track explores the inevitability of painful goodbyes and the subsequent journey through grief and acceptance, positioning Sarah firmly in the present as she seeks the light of new beginnings.
“The Way” begins with a simple combination of piano and Sarah’s voice, as the song progresses, backing vocals reminiscent of a gospel choir are integrated, reflecting the album’s inspiration drawn from Sarah’s staunch upbringing in the church, which she left at 17.
Going into detail about the song, Sarah explains that she has been feeling like turning my back on God may have contributed to misfortunes in her life. “Looking back upon the death of my mother, a failed marriage, and a failed friendship during a time that felt like the apocalypse makes sense considering I was raised to believe in the apocalypse when I was a teenager,” Sarah says.
The genesis of “The Way” occurred during a casual writing session with Bec Sandridge, where they bonded over their Christian upbringings and created lyrics humorously addressing repentance. “She kept singing ‘Get me to church!’ and I loved it,” Sarah recalls. “We weren’t sure if either of us were going to do anything with it, but I eventually pulled the song out and finished it. It was originally going to be the album closer, but a friend convinced me that it was a good place to start and set the scene, and I agreed.”
Sarah’s upcoming album “I Just Need To Conquer This Mountain” is an album filled with late-night reflections on goodbyes, grief, new beginnings, and an important childhood friendship. Recorded at Rancom Studios in Sydney, Australia, with engineer Brent Clark, and produced by Sarah Blasko herself. With Sarah revealing that, “This album was probably the most relaxed and free-feeling record I’ve made.”
