I learnt nothing new from this disappointing ABC News article about Miley Cyrus

This morning I came across this ABC News article by Velvet Winter providing a glimpse into the life and career of Miley Cyrus. While the article offers some interesting insights into Miley’s journey – from a Disney tween sensation to a versatile artist – there are several missed opportunities for more in-depth exploration of her experiences and the broader implications of her career choices.

One of the notable aspects of the article that I wanted to touch on, was its lack of depth: The article touches on various phases of Miley’s career, including her early years as Hannah Montana and the controversial Vanity Fair photo shoot from 2008. However, the article hardly scratches the surface of these topics on a broader scale, essentially leaving me wanting more context and analysis – which is what you’d normally expect from a piece from ABC News. For instance, the Vanity Fair incident, which caused a significant uproar at the time, could have been explored in greater detail. “How did it affect her career trajectory, and what lessons did she learn from it?” These are questions that could have been addressed to provide a more comprehensive understanding of her journey.

Another aspect where the article falls short is in offering a critical perspective: the article largely presents Miley Cyrus’s own statements from her TikTok without questioning or providing a broader context to the validity of claims. While it’s essential to hear her side of the story, a more balanced approach would have involved incorporating external viewpoints, such as those of industry experts, critics, or fellow artists in the music industry. These perspectives could have added depth to the article and encouraged readers to think critically about the themes discussed. The article appears to be a regurgitation of Miley’s own statements. It fails to incorporate external perspectives or expert opinions, denying readers a well-rounded view of the subject matter.

The article briefly mentions Miley’s growth and evolution as an artist and individual. However, Velvet’s article misses the opportunity to explore Miley’s transformation deeply. Exploring how Miley navigated the transition from her Disney image to her provocative “Bangerz era” could have offered valuable insights into the challenges and opportunities artists face when reinventing themselves.

One interesting point raised in the article is Miley’s statement that she “didn’t make a dime” from her Bangerz tour. However, Velvet’s article lacks context about the music industry’s economics, especially regarding touring. Including information about the financial struggles artists often face during tours would have made this point more impactful and relatable to readers.

Velvet’s article about Miley left me with a sense of wanting more – especially form an establishment like the ABC – I thought I would have gotten more than just a post out of a fangirls blog. Even though the article provides a basic overview of Miley’s career, it misses the chance to dig deeper into the key moments and themes that have defined her journey. It’s as if the audience was presented with a appetiser but never got the main course. While it’s informative to hear Miley’s perspective, a more comprehensive analysis of her career and its broader implications could have made this article a more engaging and thought-provoking read in my opinion.

ABC News is a network often associated with prestige and credibility in the world of journalism, but this article has showcased a lapse in its editorial standards with an article discussing Miley Cyrus and her TikTok series, while falling far short of the expectations that come with a reputed news outlet like ABC. ABC News is often hailed as a prestigious source of information, but the article raises serious questions about ABC’s commitment to maintaining high editorial standards. The lack of critical analysis, depth, and diverse perspectives in the piece is a disservice to its audience.
