Lights’ PEP is still an immersive and enjoyable experience of storytelling one year later

I recently got an email in my inbox from Lights – as I am a big fan of the artist and part of her mailing list – saying that it has been one year since the release of her latest album, so I thought it would be a better time than any to reflect on Lights’ “PEP”. One year ago, Lights released “PEP” which showcased her exceptional talent as both a producer and vocalist over 13 songs. To say the album is a perfect blend of energetic pop tunes would be an understatement, as the album offers a glimpse into her diverse range through introspective ballads that explore themes of self-reflection, love, and hope, and I think my sentiment still holds true one year later.

With “PEP,” It feels like Lights takes on the role of a one-woman show, the instrumentals are a combination of electronic and organic sounds, with Lights incorporating acoustic guitar and piano into her signature synth-pop style. The result is a cohesive and dynamic soundscape that keeps the listener engaged from start to finish.

One of the standout tracks on the album is “Prodigal Daughter,” which was a powerful and emotional ballad that showcases Lights’ vocal range and served as a rejuvenation/reintroduction. Another standout track is “Okay Okay,” a catchy and upbeat tune that perfectly captures the feeling of falling in love. The song features infectious hooks and a memorable chorus that will have listeners singing along in no time.

Throughout the album, Lights shows off her versatility as a vocalist, effortlessly transitioning from belting out powerful choruses to delivering intimate and emotive verses. One year on from the release, I still feel that her unique voice is complemented by the high-quality production, which showcases her attention to detail and commitment to creating a cohesive and polished album.

“PEP” is the latest addition to Lights’ impressive discography, which includes six studio albums. She first burst onto the scene in late 2000s with her album “The Listening – fun fact: I have a copy of Lights’ 2014 album on vinyl – yet to be opened – since then, Lights has continued to push the boundaries of pop music, incorporating elements of electronica, punk, and rock into her sound.

One year later, “PEP” is still a testament to Lights’ talent and dedication to her craft. The album showcases her growth as an artist and is sure to appeal to both longtime fans and new listeners alike to this day. With its infectious hooks, thoughtful lyrics, and high-quality production, “PEP” is a must-listen for anyone looking for a fresh and exciting take on pop music.
