What I’ve Been Listening To: Christian Adjeisa

Christian (CA) is a fan of Johnny Hunter, Enclave, Tracy Chapman, The Terrys, Amyl and The Sniffers, Enya, Thelma Plum, Fontaines D.C., Posty, The Weeknd and Ice Spice, too.

Christian’s new single, ‘Secrets’ is about losing trust, and what it feels like to keep secrets. “This song means a lot to me, as it helped me through the healing process from the breakdown of my last relationship,” Christian says. “It also equipped me with more resilience and empathy for others; I feel like I’ve gained a sense of maturity through being able to deeply reflect on this time of my life.”

You can watch the music video below, before getting to know more about the artist and what he is currently listening to.

Who is Christian Adjeisa and how did the name sake come about?

CA: My real name is Christian and Adjeisa is my West African middle name. I think I just went with my normal name, so I had to commit myself to music kinda like how Soundcloud rappers get face Tatts… also I thought it sounded kinda cool.

What artists or bands are on your must-listen to list lately and why?

CA: My fave Sydney bands are Johnny Hunter and Enclave, I also really like The Terrys, Amyl and The Sniffers and Thelma Plum.

However, I listen to a lot of stuff like Tracy Chapman. Everyone loves ‘Fast Car’ but I think that’s just the gateway to her music as it’s all so good. My favourites of hers would be ‘So’ and ‘For My Lover’ as I love the lyrics and are both beautiful songs.

I also love Enya; she is crazy. Her song ‘Caribbean Blue’ feels like your ears are on drugs and something about that song just does something to me. Other stuff I listen to is like Fontaines D.C., Posty, The Weeknd and Ice Spice is rad too.

When you go into the recording studio to work on new material, what are your must-haves?

CA: Beers for sure, VB is preferable, but any beers will do, not too into the Pale Ales I’d rather a Pilsner or a Lager. Also, always cans not bottles, and they must be cold, as well as a pack of darts or a joint. I just like to feel comfortable when in the studio. that’s when I’m the most creative, and I find having a lil buzz on gets everyone in a lighter mood and less serious because if it’s not fun or a vibe why do it.

Which song, or songs, of yours would you recommend to a first-time listener and why?

CA: My latest track ‘Secrets’ because it’s a good time, it’s catchy and you’ll like it. I definitely show more vulnerability in this one, and it gives the listener a glimpse into an interesting new sound for me.

Which song of someone’s else’s (artist or band) would you have liked to feature on and why?

CA: Post Malone’s ‘Buyer Beware’ off his new album. I like it cause it’s so simple and easy to play while singing and I think he’s just a hell cool dude.

What led you into becoming a musician and why do you keep making music?

CA: I was kinda messing up at school but I was mad creative and my mum championed that. So, I got into art, fashion and music. During this time, I met Tyler The Creator the day before his concert in Sydney for the first time he ever played here. When he played, I was at the front row singing every lyric at him and like he’d see me and come over every time he wanted to say the ‘N word’.

I think I was the only black guy in the front row and later that night he tweeted about the show along the lines of “There was this one kid that knew every lyric”. I felt like that was me he was talking about, and I was hella inspired and started recording my own raps.
