Today is a massive day for Australian music, we have had the release of new albums from both Acolytes and Gypsy and the Cat, and now we have another release by the kickass artist Montaigne!
Montaigne has a voice that I enjoy a lot. Before I even get to this post about her debut album, ‘Glorious Heights’, I have to admit: I am a massive fan of Montaigne. ‘Because I Love You’ is an amazing song’. That is all. As for the rest of the album, though, read on!
Of the release, Montaigne says:
“Tony and I did whatever the hell we wanted without thinking about things we’re fans of too much, only using references to illustrate to one another what kinds of sounds we wanted. I want to preach empowerment by means of self-improvement; to be able to identify ones weaknesses, analyse them, and mitigate them. I want people to realise that the warrior of this age is the kind that combats evil by refusing to take part in the processes that sustain it.”
Straight away, Montaigne’s ‘Glorious Heights’ soars to glorious heights – yes I am willing to come up with something as lame as that to use in a review – with the first song on the album ‘Glorious Heights’. The vocals are fantastic and so is the beats throughout. Did I mention that Montaigne has an amazing voice?
‘Because I Love You’ is definitely my favourite song within the Glorious Heights album. That’s not to say that I don’t enjoy the rest of the them, because that would be a lie. Because I Love You is just the best, I can’t stop talking about the song, in fact, I plan on playing it multiple times on both Eat This Music and SNL when I get the chance!
I have to admit: ‘What You Mean To Me’, ‘Lie To Myself’ and ‘Come Back To Me – Interlude’ are pretty slow songs and I didn’t enjoy them as much as the other songs on Glorious Heights. But that’s just my personal preference. ‘Come Back To Me’ is good though, Montaigne’s vocals are great.
Other songs I enjoyed are ‘Greater Than Me’, ‘Clip My Wings’ – which I have heard before the album came out, and ‘Lonely’.
A fantastic secret on the album is song 12: ‘I’m Behind You + The Debt’. Fantastic use of a hidden track and using it as the final song on Glorious Heights worked well.
Montaigne is celebrating with an extensive national album tour, kicking off at The Brisbane Festival on September 13, moving through Toowoomba, Adelaide, Perth, Canberra, Port Macquarie, Caloundra, Wollongong, Sydney, Newcastle, Geelong and finishing up at the iconic Corner Hotel in Melbourne on October 15.
