Margot touches on self-care in her single, ‘Slow Down’

“In 2020, I’m being the best, most productive and proactive version of myself,” Margot tells Eat This Music at the top of our chat about one of her singles off her new EP, but a little more on that later. “Obviously we all suffered a massive setback earlier this year but I’m trying to keep a positive attitude and stay as creative as possible.” Margot started 2020 with the release of her single ‘Rendez-Vous‘ and now she is releasing her first EP! “It’s been such a difficult time for all of us and it’s been an honour to be able to spend my time creating these songs,” Margot continues.

Margot has been very lucky and feels very blessed at the moment. “It’s been hard as I just moved to a new city in 2019,” she reveals, “and not being able to play shows or see friends and family has been a challenge.” However, Margot has been spending time focussing on her music, and she has a great home studio where she can put down all of her ideas and spend every day doing what she loves. Margot continues, “So I have to remember to be grateful for these opportunities at a time like this.”

Margot’s ‘Slow Down‘ is about self-care and self-love, taking time out of the day to look after yourself and enjoy the little things, and reminding herself that the time Margot spends working on herself is just as important as the time she spends working on her career.

“The song actually went through a long writing process,” Margot reveals on the process. “Frank Slimm and I started this one in April 2019 while I was still living in Berlin and it got shelved for months while we were working on other projects.” When Margot and her team dug it out again, she couldn’t believe they had left it for so long! “I drafted up a new set of lyrics and it all fell together in about two days,” Margot explains.

Margot felt like she wrote ‘Slow Down’ for her to listen to as much as anything else. “Like I said, it’s a reminder for me to take care of myself and my mental health,” Margot continues in our chat, “but I’m positive it’s a message that will resonate with other people too.”

The whole music video for ‘Slow Down’ is basically an exaggerated idea of how Margot would love to spend her life and her self-care moments in an ideal world. “There’s scenes of me laying in the sun, cycling through the countryside,” Margot details on the visuals of the music video, “it’s definitely a bit cliche on the front of it but it was a lot of fun to shoot and it perfectly matches the feel-good aesthetic of the track.”

As the lockdown has been easing up, Margot has been back in the rehearsal space with her band. “We have a socially distanced show coming up on the 31st of October at Amersham Arms in New Cross, London,” Margot reveals. “I’ll also be back writing, as always, and there’ll be new material in 2021.. maybe sooner?”
