Dela Kay’s “Nasty” is about not being afraid to be a freak

Alt-pop artist Dela Kay’s latest single “Nasty” is a departure from her previous works, where the track boldly explores the manifestation of her desire to explore a different facet of her identity, one she rarely reveals to her fans.

Across the song’s nearly 3-minute runtime, you’re getting Dela at her best: mixing together a diverse range of elements – including pop, trap, and rock – while maintaining an alternative sound at its core. The track explores themes of sexuality and empowerment, with Dela fearlessly embracing her wild side. “We started messing with this guitar riff I had saved in my voice memos, and soon after playing it over and over the melody and phrase ‘nasty’ came through,” Dela shares, reflecting on the creative process behind the single From there, we ran with the idea and had a lot of fun with it.”

Collaborating with friends and co-writers, Ryan and Cas, on the track, Dela aimed to craft a song that diverged from her usual style, opting instead for a more confrontational and provocative approach. “I wanted to express another side of myself I don’t really share with my fans,” Dela explains. “Something that felt very ‘in your face’ and almost a fantasy type of song, showcasing what I feel is my alter ego, allowing myself to be blunt, sexy and just have a bit more fun.”

Despite initial reservations about the song, Dela eventually decided to share “Nasty” with the world. The song serves as a powerful reminder to listeners to embrace their sexuality unapologetically and to revel in their own desires.

“It’s about not being afraid to own your sexuality, no matter how you identify, and not being afraid to demand what you want and feel sexy,” Dela continues. “We all are secretly a little bit of a freak, so why not have fun with it. Being nasty is hot.”

Dela Kay’s “Nasty” is a great showcase of a song that is full of infectious energy that comes with an empowering message.
