REBEL YELL’S ‘DESOLATION’ is a reinforcement of strength and vulnerability

Melbourne-based producer, electronic/industrial-pop project Rebel Yell has released her third album, ‘DESOLATION’, a bold departure for the artist, who has been crafting fierce anthems for the tender-hearted since 2016.

‘DESOLATION’ is not just an album, it’s a sonic landscape that pushes the boundaries of her signature industrial sound. Opening with static bass, throbbing drum machine, chants, and haunting wails, the focus track ‘The Hell We Chose‘ immediately grabs you with throbbing beats and ethereal melodies unfolding across the nine songs; the artist shares her introspective lyrics, inviting listeners to join her in the exploration of resilience and vulnerability.

“I wanted a raw reaction from Margaux, who I had been living and studying with and had seen the way her body reacted strongly to the sounds around her,” Rebel Yell says about the opening song on the record. “I was curious to see how she would move to my music on first listen. We set up lights with green cellophane in the studios down by the old local fish factories and filmed in the wintery dark town, in the chilling building.”

Although, that is not the only song off the album that showcases the Melbourne artist’s extraudinary production and lyrical wit, as other highlights include Kombat‘s recurring beats, Reprise‘s dance-floor-esq production and Shadow‘s duelling vocals.

“As I spent time away from populated areas, I allowed myself the freedom to see my true self, my past, my actions, my friends and acquaintances from an outside view. I realigned my values and connected with those who aligned with that of my own,” Rebel says about her creative process. “This process led me to a greater confidence within myself, without shame or fear and helped me to create and release this album.”

‘DESOLATION’ serves as a showcase of Rebel Yell’s artistic prowess and her unyielding determination to redefine the boundaries of her sound. Rejecting conventional album formats, ‘DESOLATION’ reinforces Rebel Yell’s commitment to showcasing the interplay between strength and vulnerability, emphasising that true power lies in embracing one’s softer side.
