What We’ve Been Listening To: Live Like Animals

Sydney-based alt-rock band Live Like Animals have released their new single, “The White Room“, delivering an electrifying track, full of high-intensity composition, aggressive riffs, vibrant synths, and hooks for days.

Live Like Animals masterfully weaves together elements of rock and pop, creating a sonic that serves as the perfect backdrop for vocalist Nic’s exceptional range. Nic effortlessly transitions between powerful belts and cathartic screams, showcasing talent and emotional depth. Lyrically, the song delves into the debilitating isolation of chronic anxiety, eloquently capturing the overwhelming rush of thoughts that can leave one feeling utterly lost.

Keyboardist Brendan sheds light on the inspiration behind “The White Room,” explaining that it is the foundation of a conceptual world based on Nic’s mind. As the first of six rooms, this track explores Nic’s experiences with panic, anxiety, and overthinking. Live Like Animals’ “The White Room” is an impressive display of their talent, with a production that perfectly balances raw intensity and polished refinement.

Who are Live Like Animals and how did the namesake come about?

Live Like Animals is the name of a Nothing But Thieves song which is a very similar namesake to how that band got their name from the name of a band in their local scene. The name of our band resonates with our own chaotic nature and instinctual way of composing songs and melodies.

What artists or bands are on your must-listen to list lately and why?

Enter Shikari continue to push boundaries sonically and lyrically and very much influence our own unpredictable nature. Their new album is FIRE. Genesis Owusu also innovates with their musicianship and song crafting to an immense scale which is an audience we would like to emulate. Don Broco would be our last pick as their continual ability to create catchy riffs and vocal hooks inspires a great deal of [Live Like] Animals music and it is inspirational to watch them play to bigger and more accessible audiences.

When you go into the recording studio to work on new material, what are your must-haves?

Nic must have a lot of tea as it fuels both his voice and his mind for more careful and candid inspiration. Nic also has his neon-llama-light which gives him luck and inspiration further unless the battery dies. Ryan has a gallon milk and a snack pack because he needs to think and create on a full stomach. Brendan needs to film everything because he has a crippling social media addiction, and you will never see him without his phone.

Which song, or songs, of yours would you recommend to a first-time listener and why?

100% Bleach. It is, both our most accessible and creative song to date. It also has our most up-to-date mix and showcases the band’s propensity for catchy hooks as much as unpredictable structure and riffs.

Which song of someone’s else’s (artist or band) would you have liked to feature on and why?

Nic would love to feature on a Hellions track. We believe they have some of the most forward-thinking lyrics and arrangements in Australian heavy music and would love to be a part of their art.

What led you into becoming a musician(s) and why do you keep making music?

Music is part of our blood and respiratory system. We all breathe music and listen to it daily for inspiration. Most of us believe that creating music and art is what makes us unique and human and continues to make life worth living.
