Nikita Bassi explores an exaggeration of a past “relationship” in her latest single ‘Rescue’

Following on from the release of her debut single – and title track off her upcoming EP due out 19 September – ‘Satin‘, pop artist Nikita Bassi has returned with a second taste of the EP with ‘Rescue‘, a song that is essentially about exploring an exaggeration of a past ‘relationship’.

Speaking to Eat This Music about the single, Nikita explained how great it feels to have the single out, and how “Rescue is pretty different than” her “first release Satin – a little bit eerie but more lively. It was fun to change it up,” Nikita expresses.

Going into detail about the story of the single, Nikita explains how the inspiration came from a time she was in a relationship, and how “it was definitely not love, but it was a self-destructive thing cloaked in me pretending to myself that I was in control of, or at least fine with, the situation.”

“To break it down, I was seeing a real Playaaa at the time, despite everyone around me recommending against it.”

Touching on the relationship, Nikita expresses how it was “just full of a lot of empty promises,” and how they “changed their mind every morning about whether we were actually seeing each other or not, etc … We’ve all been there hey!”

Speaking on the aesthetics of the single, Nikita gets into the nitty and gritty of the track for those tach-heads reading, “I started with some organ chords then I found the Persian Santoor sound that plays through the chorus, and I was like oooooh I need to do something with this. I didn’t know what, but something. Then I just played around with ideas until it all felt right,” Nikita states.

Nikita continues with how she “recorded a rough vocal after being out all day with the person who made” her “think up the tune, and hilariously decided” she “would smoke with him for the day even though” she “don’t smoke (most immature move – So impressive…” she “had a lot of learning to do…)”, then ” through vocal was a bit more croaky than normal and in the end, Cores” and Nikita “decided it weirdly worked for this track.”

On the importance of the single, Nikita explained to Eat This Music how all of “the songs on the EP are important” to her in a way. It is her “first and only EP so far, and most of these songs were written a while ago”, They have “just been sitting there while” Nikita “went through a few experiences within ‘the industry’ which ultimately made” her “feel that” her “own songs weren’t good enough”. Nikita then “gained some confidence and a deeper understanding of what is important” to her, and “decided to self-release the tunes” she “was happy with in the first place.”

Expanding on the above, I asked Nikita why she wanted to release the single, in short, Nikita explained it is because she “just loves making music” and how it is “a huge part” of her life.

“I don’t think I was ready mentally to release Rescue or the first single Satin until this time in my life.”

However, on why Nikita decided to release the single now, Nikita explained how she “had no confidence in” her own sound or herself. “I found it hard to admit to anyone, including myself, that I wanted to be ‘an artist, Nikita explained.

Nikita then continued with how the “whole thing can feel really self-indulgent sometimes, and a bit of a weird one when you’re standing on a stage asking people to look at you, but then feel totally awkward about it!”

“I had some growing up to do, and I’m sure I still do, but it just wasn’t the right time until recently,” Nikita continues.

With the upcoming release of the EP dropping on 19th September, Nikita explained how the EP features “all love songs of some kind”m as they “touch on caution, comfort, lust, and immaturity.”

“I’d say they [EP songs] sum up a period in my life with a much younger, more naive love than what I’ve come to understand and experience now.”

Other than the EP releasing within the next couple of days, the remainder of Nikita’s 2019 looks to be busy as she has “got a few live bits coming up from now until the end of the year,” and she is also planning “on just really working” on herself and her craft, “as cheesy as that sounds.”

Who is Nikita Bassi? by Nikita Bassi

“This music connected me to my Punjabi Indian roots, which made it an especially important thing for me to do. It’s a kind of world fusion, but still electronic, still pop. I’m just putting songs out that means something to me, and if they can do the same for you as a listener – I’m living the dream really.”

Nikita’s ‘Satin’ EP is out on 19 September via the usual digital streaming platforms.
