Hamilton Leithauser’s “Knockin’ Heart” is an experiment in storytelling

Hamilton Leithauser is the frontman of The Walkmen, and he has unveiled his brand new solo single, “Knockin’ Heart,” which is the second single from his forthcoming album, “This Side of the Island”. Set to release on March 7, the album marks a departure from the folk-rock aesthetics of Hamilton’s earlier works, embracing a groovier, bass-rich, and modern sound.

Co-produced by Hamilton, Aaron Dessner, and Hamilton wife, Anna, This Side of the Island reflects an evolved creative vision. The record’s juxtaposes Hamilton’s characteristic optimism and biting humour with Aaron’s expansive, contemporary production. The album was largely shaped during sessions at Aaron’s Long Pond Studio, where his instrumental contributions and innovative techniques elevated the sonic textures to new heights.

“Knockin’ Heart,” with its layered basslines and narrative, encapsulates creative synergy. Aaron’s influence is particularly evident in the innovative bass arrangements, which incorporate three distinct bass tracks—two played by Aaron and one by Hamilton. Reflecting on the track, Hamilton explained, “Aaron raised the ceiling and lowered the floor sonically. His bass technique, borrowed from a Taylor Swift project, gave the song a depth and richness I hadn’t explored before.”

Written and recorded in a single evening, “Knockin’ Heart” sat untouched for over a year before Hamilton revisited it with Aaron. The song’s narrative portrays an estranged lover desperate to communicate a heartfelt message – a universal theme delivered with raw emotion and an undercurrent of wit. This unpolished authenticity, combined with Aaron’s polished production techniques, creates a balance that feels both spontaneous and masterfully crafted.

Hamilton’s home studio in New York, affectionately dubbed The Struggle Hut, has been his creative haven for nearly a decade. However, his collaboration with Aaron at Long Pond marked a turning point for this project. Aaron’s contributions, from playing various instruments to refining the overall sound, allowed the album to bridge timeless songwriting with a forward-thinking production style.

Hamilton’s ability to reinvent his sound while retaining his signature storytelling has cemented his reputation as a strong artist in his field. From his days as a leading figure in New York’s early 2000s rock revival to his flourishing solo career, Hamilton’s This Side of the Island – and his new song – proves once again that his artistry is as dynamic and resonant as ever. For fans of thoughtful production and evocative songwriting, This Side of the Island promises to be a landmark release that marries the best of timeless rock traditions with innovative modern sounds.
