BANKS’ ‘I Hate Your Ex-Girlfriend’ explores the uncanny and erotic world of Exes

Singer-songwriter BANKS has made a return with her brand-new single, featuring rapper and singer Doechii. This track, packed with dark synths and an infectious beat, marks BANKS’ first self-release in two years and sets the stage for a fresh era of her music. Accompanied by a provocative, fashion-forward video directed by Charlie Denis.

The story behind the song, as BANKS explained, was born from a personal experience. A partner’s ex-girlfriend sent a suggestive “I miss you” text while BANKS was with him, knowing they had been together for some time. What started as a humorous studio conversation evolved into an anthem of playful defiance and empowerment. “It turned into the anthem of ‘I Hate Your Ex-Girlfriend,’” says BANKS.

The visual for the song reflects the intensity and unapologetic energy of the track. Director Charlie describes his approach to the video as similar to a fashion editorial, filled with bold, surreal visuals and big fashion moments. Charlie aimed to build an “uncanny and erotic world” to match the storyline between BANKS and Doechii, resulting in a thrilling visual that perfectly complements the song’s feminist energy.

Jillian Rose Banks, known simply as BANKS, has established herself as a leading voice in alternative pop since emerging in the early 2010s. Known for her moody, downtempo alt-R&B sound, BANKS has captivated a cross-genre audience with her emotive, raw lyrics and boundary-pushing production. BANKS continued to evolve with her 2019 release ‘III‘, blending her signature moody synths.

With this new song, BANKS has proven again her ability to craft compelling, emotionally raw music that resonates with listeners. As she continues to explore new creative avenues, BANKS is poised for an exciting future, with more music likely on the horizon.
