Beloved Australian singer-songwriter Pete Murray is back with his latest single and music video, “Wouldn’t It Be Good” (WIBG), marking a return in 2024. Filled with groovy rhythms, sunny melodies, and Pete’s soothing vocals, this new track perfectly captures the spirit of summer as Pete gears up for an extensive tour kicking off in December and concluding in January 2025.
WIBG began with a simple guitar riff before evolving into something new for Pete, marking a shift in his creative process. Working alongside producer Luke Palmer, Pete refined the track into a vibrant addition to his catalog. “It just started with the opening riff then went to the two-chord verse,” Pete explains. “I was really just searching for the chorus lyrics, and the music just seemed to fit in with the lyrics. It’s normally the other way around.”
Pete also shared how the track initially faced skepticism from friends and collaborators, but he remained determined to bring the song to life. With some help from his nephew Dylan Cattanach (aka Katanak) during an early demo, Pete began to see the potential of the track. Even during the recording process, producer Luke Palmer wasn’t fully convinced at first. “During the recording of the album, I even played it to Luke and he wasn’t that into it, so I left it until the very end of the album recording and I brought it up again and got Luke to help me with it,” Pete recalls. But after adding a bass line and drum groove with congas, the song fell into place, and Palmer became a strong advocate for its inclusion on the album.
The accompanying music video, created by OneHouse, features Pete and his band performing in a studio setting. While keeping the visuals simple, Pete hinted at a future video concept involving a well-known tennis player. “For this video, we worked with the talented OneHouse, one of the most exciting up-and-coming production teams in the country,” Pete adds. OneHouse has garnered attention for their work on short films and music videos for artists like Boy & Bear and Steph Strings.
Coated in positivity and acoustic magic, WIBG channels the essence of John Lennon, Jack Johnson, and Rodriguez, according to Pete. Mixed by Callam Howell, the track is infused with Pete’s trademark charm and affable style, blending heartfelt lyrics with a fresh, dynamic sound.
