Ruby Mae’s ‘Hurricane’ is a song inspired by themes of all-consuming love

Melbourne, Australia’s indie music scene continues to thrive with artist Ruby Mae, who has released her latest track, ‘Hurricane’, further cementing her evolving work in the vibrant local music landscape. Following the success of her previous singles ‘Keeper‘ and ‘All My Brothers Have Girlfriends‘, ‘Hurricane’ marks another significant stride in her journey as a songwriter and musician.

‘Hurricane’ draws inspiration from themes of all-consuming love, the kind of passionate romance often idealised in literature. Initially written as a slow acoustic piece, the track underwent a transformative production process with producer/engineer Stephen Mowat. This creative evolution turned the song into a more upbeat number infused with pop sensibilities, featuring a prominent drum beat that introduces the song.

Discussing the inspiration behind the song, Ruby explains that she loved the idea of using something like a hurricane to explain the impact of a person. Strong, dangerous, powerful, destructive. “But not being afraid of that because you love them,” she adds. “And sometimes love blinds you. When we recorded it with Stephen, we decided the album needed a faster song, so we experimented with doubling the tempo and adding pop elements. It’s definitely different from anything I have ever released before, but I like that about it.”

Ruby’s debut EP was released in 2019 to positive reception, and she has since been diligent in developing a robust catalog that resonates with audiences. Her music – known for its blend of lyrics and guitar-driven melodies – feels tailor-made for a coming-of-age film soundtrack. It also translates effortlessly to live performances, where Ruby has established herself as one of Melbourne’s most compelling new voices.

Fans of indie music and heartfelt songwriting will find ‘Hurricane’ a welcome addition to Ruby Mae’s growing body of work, as she continues to explore and express the depths of human emotions through her music.
