Devon Thompson’s “Skin” EP is like a bipolar rollercoaster of emotions

“Skin” is the latest EP from alt-rocker Devin Thompson – a raw and introspective exploration of the delicate yet resilient nature of human existence – exploring the themes of self-awareness, duality, and the beauty found within pain.

Devon’s lyrical expertise and gothic aesthetics create a beautiful blend of dark and creative melodies across five songs; reflecting both vulnerability and strength.

In her own words, Devon describes “Skin” as a bipolar rollercoaster of emotions, highlighting the visceral and ethereal aspects of life. “This year I have been abusing [my skin] with all the guitar playing and my tattoos, so it only felt fair to dedicate some of the most painful songs to it,” Devon says. “The skin on my fingertips would basically either shrivel up and fall off or would be rubbed raw from all the steel string contact.”

Recorded primarily in Nashville with various co-writers, the EP serves as a showcase of complexity and Devon’s personality. With tracks oscillating between soft, angelic tones and darker, more pessimistic themes, Devon embraces the dichotomy of fairytales versus nightmares, offering listeners a glimpse into her fever dream-like visions.

Despite her youthful demeanour, Devon’s body of work in this EP are imbued with a mature levity that belies her age. Growing up in Los Angeles, she faced criticism and bullying for her artistic inclinations, yet these challenges only fuelled her creative spirit. Embracing her outsider perspective, Devon channels her experiences into her songwriting, resulting in a body of work that resonates with authenticity and depth.

Skin is Devon’s second EP, and it highlights the visceral and ethereal, the duality of her emotions. The EP in its entirety is like a bipolar rollercoaster of emotions.
