What We’ve Been Listening To: Sir Archer

Sydney-based band Sir Archer are fans of War On Drugs, Parcels, The Bros Landreth, and really wish they featured on ‘Everybody Wants To Rule The World’.

Have a listen to the band’s latest single – which they explain was “inspired by an interaction we had with a stranger late one night who, in a moment of vulnerability, told us about the recent loss of his father.”

Eat This Music: Who is Sir Archer and how did the name come about?

Sir Archer: I don’t think we know. Who at 30 knows who they are? I guess that’s us in a nutshell: six 30-year-olds trying to find out who they are through making music. Our name was decided after a frustrating few weeks of trying to agree on something. We had an EP of tunes before we had a name! Reflecting on our recording trip, we could all agree on our love for one thing: A condiment.

What artists or bands are on your must-listen to list lately and why?

Lately, War On Drugs and Parcels have us pretty tangled up. If you have listened to either, the “why” is self-explanatory: they are bands creating timeless music, thoughtful choices and attention to every detail. Tight groups with ridiculous musicianship. The Bros Landreth have also had our attention for a while and are certainly a must listen!

When you go into the recording studio to work on new material, what are your must-haves?

Must have a bunch of cool old instruments, amps and gear. We like digging into tones and sounds. There is something special that comes out of you when playing a real Fender Rhodes or an old Ludwig Kit. However, Caramilk and Doritos also seem to be a common theme.

Which song, or songs, of yours would you recommend to a first-time listener and why?

Go for “Calypso” – that’s your entree. The main is ‘Heed The Call’. Dessert is “Baby It’s You”. Hopefully, after that, you will want seconds…

Which song of someone’s else’s (artist or band) would you have liked to feature on and why?

‘Everybody Wants To Rule The World’ – Tears For Fears. Getting to feature on that would mean that we were there, in the studio, while it was being created. It would be like knowing the kernels secret herbs and spices!

What led you into becoming musicians and why do you keep making music?

I don’t think we had a choice, it found us and stuck around. Being involved in music, as either a lover, a creator or both, is a golden thread to your life. It becomes the glue between your choices, your friends, your hobbies, and your being. We have each spent many years playing music and it still feels just as exciting and fresh as the day we started – I think we are addicted to that.
