Laurence-Anne’s “Vitesse” explores the conflict between what is real and fake

Montreal’s Laurence-Anne ventures into the mystical territories of night, dreams, and imagination in her newest song. Laurence-Anne’s music blends dream pop, cold wave, and synth-pop, whilst being sung across three languages: English, French, and Spanish.

Laurence-Anne’s “Vitesse” music video captures the essence of her album, embodying the contrast between oneiric beauty and unsettling realism. Directed by Didier Pigeon-Perreault, the video is set against the backdrop of a rodeo, a choice that enhances the surreal and ambiguous atmosphere of the song. The director’s intent to merge the realms of dream and reality is achieved through the use of monochrome visuals and a setting that defies geographical categorisation, placing Laurence-Anne in an uncanny scenario that oscillates between the sinister and the seductive.

As Laurence-Anne navigates the rodeo, the video reflects the song’s themes of stress, anxiety, and darkness, capturing the artist’s confrontation with a spectacle that is both enthralling and menacing. “That’s why I decided to set the action in a rodeo that looks neither Québécois nor American, a place of which the identity remains unclear,” Didier says. “Laurence-Anne is witnessing a show that’s trying to get under her skin, but she can’t figure out whether it’s for good or evil.”

Laurence-Anne’s “Vitesse” and its music video offer a profound exploration of the shadows that linger at the edge of our dreams, inviting listeners and viewers into a space where the fantastical and the tangible coalesce.
