Cosmorat’s “No Sleep” is the rumination of addiction

Cosmorat’s debut EP is a journey through the tangled web of anxieties, boredom, and despair that often accompanies the transition from youth to adulthood. Their latest offering, “No Sleep” serves as the focal point of the EP, showcasing the band’s evolving indie-pop aesthetic and lyrical depth.

The EP’s standout track embodies the band’s newfound ambitions. It is a reflection on a loved one’s struggle with mental illness and addiction, inspired by a heart-wrenching phone call with Lead vocalist Taylor’s mom. The song captures the vulnerability of being far from home during critical moments and the anguish of witnessing a loved one’s downward spiral. As the track progresses, it weaves a haunting vocal canon that mirrors the relentless cycle of anxious thoughts that plague sleepless nights.

“No Sleep is a rumination on a loved one struggling with mental illness and addiction,” Taylor says. “I wrote this one night after a harrowing phone call with my mom about someone really close to us. Sometimes, since moving away from home, I am feeling like I am missing out on important life events from my family. Often, when I am feeling helpless and far away, I stay up all night thinking about the worst possible outcomes and how I can’t immediately be at home and help.”

This song is a mix of bright and shimmering tones that complement the evocative vocals. The song’s structure starts with distinct vocal melodies that gradually merge into a harmonious choral arrangement. As it builds towards the climax, strings join in, creating a circular and entrancing pattern that mirrors the relentless nature of overthinking and sleeplessness.
