Alice Merton’s ‘run away girl’ is an introspective look at being lost

Alice Merton has kicked off 2024 unveiling her latest track, “run away girl”, from her own label! “run away girl” transports to the ’80s with its classic influences: infusing Alice’s dark-pop sound with an even greater intensity. Produced in collaboration with James Dring and her regular partner Paul Whalley, the track showcases Alice’s brooding and introspective lyrics, delivering a powerful musical experience across its runtime.

Alice’s approach to the song is evident as she dives into themes of self-discovery and feeling adrift both externally and internally. With this song, Alice questions the expectations imposed by society and the constant search for one’s true identity, acknowledging that answers may never come easily. “Since I can remember, in every life phase I have been in, I have always questioned two things: who am I, and who am I supposed to be? I thought when you grow up, all these questions magically get answered but as I continue to witness, I don’t think you ever quite know,” Alice says.

“run away girl” serves as an exploration of self and the disorientation experienced in the ever-changing world, compounded by the desire to escape one’s past and memories. Alice’s personal experiences of frequent relocations resonate within the song, shedding light on life’s lessons learned and the restlessness for the unknown. “Where do I fit in, in all this craziness? Who do I actually want to be in life?” Alice continues. “We are constantly surrounded by the opinions of others, who show us what their version of happiness is, so we automatically assume ours must be the same. It often isn’t.”

The track marks the beginning of a new chapter in Alice’s artistic journey, filled with self-reflection and introspection; it acknowledges that the more we learn about life and ourselves, the more we realize how much we don’t know. Alice adds, “This song comes to you in a new chapter full of questions to myself and to you. It is the beginning of a series of events that have led me to realise that the more I learn about life and myself, the less I actually know. But what do I know? I am happy to share this with you. I hope you enjoy the next chapter.”

“run away girl” is a another showcase of Alice’s evolution as an artist and promises exciting new music to come in the year ahead.
