Sophia Amato’s NY/LON EP is an ode to urban euphoria

In a radiant display of musical expertise, Sophia Amato’s sophomore EP, “NY/LON”, is a mix of six-tracks that immerses in the vibrant story of her personal journey through the bustling streets of New York and London. Spearheaded by “ISAIAH,” each track on the EP mixes together Sophia’s experiences during a scorching New York summer, capturing the essence of the city’s diverse and pulsating culture.

Sophia draws inspiration from Federico García Lorca’s ‘Blood Wedding‘, blending the landscapes of Sicily with the structures of New York City. “I wrote this EP as a love letter to New York in summer, 2019,” Sophia says about her EP. “I was reading Lorca’s play ‘Blood Wedding’. His plays’ celebrate the anti protagonist, so in 21st century Brooklyn, every reason to flock to House of Yes for an unpredictable, outrageous night out to confirm why.”

The thematic work is evident across the EP’s opener, “ICONS”, where horns and synths mirror the imposing presence of the city’s iconic skyscrapers. The EP then takes a turn with “SUNBURN,” where Sophia explores the complex dynamics between herself and the city itself, expressing love and acceptance.

The title track, “NY/LON” serves as the nexus of the EP, taking inspiration from Sophia’s flights between the two cities. “That summer I kept extending my flight,” Sophia continues. “Not quite ready to return to London. Sitting by the air con in apartment L63, lethargic and beautifully strung out from city nights, I felt most alive and curious. Unsure where to call home, I wrote ‘NY/LON’ as my metaphysical utopia, suspended somewhere between the two cities.” That experience creates a soundscape that encapsulates the cities. “RUN ON WATER” invites listeners on a journey, exploring themes of resilience and personal evolution. Meanwhile, “CASINO” celebrates the exhilaration of having a lucky charm in one’s life.

Sophia’s background in theatre arts shines through in her music, adding a cinematic quality that distinguishes her sound. The transition from theatre to becoming a singer/songwriter is on full display in this audible release, with Sohpia’s relentless pursuit of creative excellence evident across all six songs.

As Sophia continues to push the boundaries of music, art, and motion pictures, “NY/LON” is a celebration of urban euphoria, an ode to the spirit of New York, and a showcase of Sophia’s talent and creative vision.
