Darko challenge the traditional expectations of masculinity in their new single, “What I Cannot Be”

In a punk landscape that thrives on speed and controlled chaos, UK punks Darko return with an electrifying new single and video, “What I Cannot Be.” True to their signature style, the band blends blistering speed with a controlled frenzy, catapulting you into an exhilarating frantic experience.

The two-minute assault sees the band condemning “neanderthal hardmen” and challenging traditional expectations of masculinity. The track’s intensity serves as a front for Frontman Tom’s frustration with the societal pressures and stereotypes that harm both men and women. As the Tom explains, “Being pushed into boxes based on redundant stereotypes hurts everyone.”

“Melodic skate punk will always be in the DNA of Darko, but sometimes it just isn’t angry enough for the subject matter.” — Tom from Darko on their sound

Darko’s evolution is evident in their unbarred barrage of hybridised skate punk and melodic hardcore. The band navigates serrated thrash, metallic digressions, and emotive post-hardcore structures, creating a journey that seamlessly traverses genres. Darko, over a raucous decade, has solidified their status as a veteran band of the UK punk scene. The departure of longtime artist Dan Smith in 2020 marked a significant shift, for the band, with Tom of UK shredders, Almeida, stepping into the vocal role. The band embraces lyrical discomfort and challenges their scene to unleash their own salvos, which is evident in this new release.

Darko’s European tour in December promises to be a high-octane celebration of their punk expertise. The tour – spanning Germany, Belgium, the Netherlands, Czech Republic, and Austria – will be a showcase of the band’s commitment to bringing their energetic and impactful performances to fans across the continent.

Rob, Chris, Karl, Andy, and Tom have come together to showcase a reimagined, powerful, and determined Darko. With “What I Cannot Be” standing as a showcase of their commitment to pushing punk boundaries and challenge the landscape.
