Written during a tumultuous period marked by political upheaval and a pervasive sense of despair, Magnets’ heartfelt lyrics explore a universal call to confront life’s overwhelming burdens. “Trump was in power, Scomo was at Hillsong, and Tony Abbott had just paid a visit to Cardinal Pell,” Magnets says. “In the midst of lockdown and my own assault court case, it felt like my chest was collapsing. I reached out to 1800 RESPECT, an invaluable support line for victim-survivors, admitting, ‘I’m just so overwhelmed by the news!’ The counsellor’s response was reassuring: ‘I know, it’s a lot. The phones haven’t stopped ringing.”
Magnets’ style blends carefully curated sounds that both uplifts and energises the importance of the mix, with an approach that is nuanced – as she guides the production across its nearly three-minute runtime – amidst the infectious beats and catchy melodies lies a pop anthem with substance. ‘Down’ encourages introspection and the importance of seeking help.
