Woodes’ ‘Hibernation’ is a sonic exploration of emotional empowerment

Australian singer-songwriter Woodes has taken a compelling plunge into the darker side of her creative persona with her new EP, ‘Hibernation’. The four-track collection is a showcase of Woodes’ cinematic approach to music, exploring the emotions of nostalgia, longing, and hope into dynamic anthems that redefine her alternative pop soundscapes.

In contrast to her previous EP, ‘Kingdom Come‘ where lush, hypnotic melodies took center stage, ‘Hibernation’ sees Woodes fully embracing the immersive and cinematic side of her artistry. Woodes describes this EP as a “very pure version” of herself, marking a shift towards a more independent and unapologetic expression of her musical identity.

“This is a very pure version of me,” Woodes says. “I was making music with my friend, and I was completely independent. I knew I had to stand behind it with a ‘ride or die’ energy. It felt great when I came out on the other side of everything… She’s coming out of Hibernation into this strong version of herself.”

The songs on the EP are great in their individuality; lead single, “Don’t Look Back” features a tribal-style percussive groove underscored by a shuffling beat and punctuated by cello. Woodes envisions it as the trailer for the “Woodes movie,” a grand vision of legends past and a representation of going after one’s dreams with grit and immediacy.

Another standout track, “War Cry” serves as a powerful call-to-arms for women facing abuse of all kinds. Woodes remarks, “Abuse doesn’t have to be physical; it can be verbal, subtle manipulation, and bending the truth.” The song emerges as an anthem of empowerment, symbolizing a girl rising above and refusing to endure mistreatment any longer.

Closing the EP with “Heavenly,” Woodes explores acoustic simplicity, allowing her vocals to hover above a whisper.
