Album of the Day

Olivia Dean’s ‘Ladies Room’ EP is a joyful celebration of connection

Olivia Dean invites listeners into the heartwarming world of her Mercury Prize Album of the Year shortlisted debut, Messy, with the release of her new single – and subsequent four-track EP – ‘Ladies Room.’ The track is not just a piece of music; it’s a vivid portrayal of the community and unexpected camaraderie often found between strangers in the women’s bathroom.

Inspired by a surreal encounter in her local pub’s restroom, where a stranger candidly shared details about a relationship with a partner two decades her senior, ‘Ladies Room’ is a charming tribute to the shared experiences that bind women together. Olivia’s ability to extract the humor and humanity from real-life moments is a testament to her songwriting prowess.

The ‘Ladies Room’ EP is a four-track delight that captures the essence of Olivia’s magnetic live performances. The radio edit of the titular track is a vibrant blend of infectious melodies and Olivia’s soulful vocals. The EP also features a live version of ‘Ladies Room,’ recorded at her sold-out headline show at London’s Somerset House, providing a taste of the electric energy she brings to the stage.

Adding to the EP’s allure is a live recording of Olivia’s much-loved cover of Kelis and Andre 3000’s ‘Millionaire.’ The inclusion of this cover showcases Olivia’s versatility and her ability to breathe new life into iconic tracks.

“I can’t wait to fill these rooms with love and warmth and dancing feet,” Olivia says about her upcoming tour across the U.S. “It’s gonna be very special and I can’t wait to sing with you all.”

Olivia Dean’s relevance doesn’t stop at her musical talent; there’s a psychological dimension to her music-making that resonates with listeners. The narratives she weaves, like ‘Ladies Room,’ don’t merely entertain but create an emotional connection. The EP is a showcase of storytelling in music, offering listeners an immersive experience that goes beyond the auditory, touching the heart and lifting the spirits.
