Cat & Calmell’s “How Do You Feel?” mini-album is a deep dive into the human experience

The Sydney-based alt-pop duo, Cat & Calmell, will take you on a profound journey through the human psyche with their latest mini-album, “How Do You Feel?” Each track within this musical odyssey feels like a stop on an elevator with seven floors, each representing a different facet of life and emotion (floor). Cat & Calmell’s exploration of these floors is nothing short of poetic, inviting listeners to unravel the complexities of growing up and the bittersweet process of bidding farewell to one’s former self.

In this mini-album – and I say mini because it only has seven songs – the duo follows the recent singles ‘Feel Alive‘ and ‘Overstimulated,’ serves as an urgent and epic conclusion to this mini-album, which unfolds over 27 mystical minutes. The lyrics pose questions that resonate deeply with anyone who has ever questioned their own feelings and their path to healing. It’s a question that is both sarcastic and sincere, echoing the ambiguity of the human experience itself.

“I feel like the last song on LOM was super vulnerable and sort of set us up for this new project,” Cat says. “For the most part, on our last album, we were just having fun and writing about whatever, and then with the last song the ice had just started to crack. Now, with this project we’re like, ‘OK, we’re dealing with it now. There’s shit we need to talk about.”

As Cat & Calmell explore the intricate themes of life, trauma, and healing, they transport listeners into a realm of melancholic yet liberating vibes. This mini-album is a purgatory of emotions, akin to that surreal post-crying fit silence, where you’re simultaneously zoned out and hyper-aware. This ambivalence is where the magic happens, where healing and self-acceptance begin to take shape.

The music video for ‘How Do You Feel?’ shot on location in South Korea is a stunning visual realisation of the key song’s themes, further immersing us in the emotional landscape Cat & Calmell have created for themselves across this mini-album.

This mini-album comes two years after their debut EP, which propelled them to the global stage with hits like ‘Dumbshit‘ and ‘Dramatic.’ Cat & Calmell’s journey continues to evolve, and with “How Do You Feel?” acting as a sequel whilst revisiting the experiences and issues explored in their debut EP with newfound wisdom and insight.

As we dive deeper into the music of Cat & Calmell, you’d be remiss to overlook the fact that at its core, this mini-album is essentially a vessel for human emotion and self-expression.
