Sally Shapiro & NICOLAAS’ “Rent” remix is a captivating journey into the realms of synthpop and funk

Sally Shapiro’s latest release, “Rent (NICOLAAS Remix)”, is a captivating journey into the realms of synthpop and funk.

The instrumental arrangement of this song is a funky revelation, as NICOLAAS has lent his expertise to infuse the original track with a fresh, groovy vibe. The lively beats and smooth basslines invite listeners to move to the rhythm, creating an infectious atmosphere across its over five-minute runtime. This song is a showcase of NICOLAAS’ mastery in crafting music that bridges the past and the present, as well as his deep respect for Sally Shapiro’s original work.

“I’m a huge fan of Sally Shapiro and the Pet Shop Boys, so when I was asked to produce this remix I jumped at the opportunity!” NICOLAAS says about the song. “Anyone who knows me knows remixing is one of my favourite ways to make music, and this song is a perfect example. I love how it turned out and I’m honoured to be a part of the release.”

The production quality of this remix blends elements that feels both nostalgic and contemporary, as Steve Moore’s saxophone solo adds an extra layer of charm, elevating the track to an even higher plane of musical excellence than its original version.

“I first heard of NICOLAAS when he remixed Mothermary’s “Coming For You” for After Dark 4, that remix blew me away,” Johan from Sally Shapiro. “His slick and funky take on “Rent” is great, and Steve Moore’s saxophone solo became “the dot above the I”, as we say in Sweden.”

Sally’s vocals are woven into the remix, contributing to the overall allure of the song. Her voice – at times chopped into staccato shards – create a contrast with the smooth instrumentation, as a vocal performance that complements the remix’s intricate layers.

This remix of “Rent” not only pays homage to the legacy of Sally Shapiro – made up of Sally Shapiro and Johan Agebjörn – but also breathes new life into the track, giving it a vibrant and contemporary spin.
