Fan Girl explore the complexities of love in their newest single ‘falling’

Fan Girl’s new single ‘falling’ is a boisterous and kinetic piece – that features the vocals of Elizabeth M. Drummond – that marks their first release of 2023, and showcases the Melbourne-based band’s raw intensity and musical expertise.

Fan Girl’s ‘falling’ explores the complexities of love, in which it is about how the honeymoon period in a relationship is just the beginning. “While it can be an electric and pleasurably nauseating period, it’s not the best bit, and it’s often not the real bit,” the band says about the song.

Their studio, Taste Police HQ in Brunswick, Melbourne, served as the creative hub for this sonic journey, resulting in a rich sound. The addition of Elizabeth M. Drummond’s vocals to the song take this that extra mile, transforming the track into a choir of emotions, with nuances of both haunting and divine aesthetics.

The song’s structure is a solid showcase of Fan Girl’s artistic work as a collective unit, where the verses are delightfully fun and bouncy, giving off an explosive chorus. The outro to the song – while anthemic – maintains a tight and disciplined underlying sound. The result of all those together is a crafted piece of art that draws you in with its intensity across the nearly 3-minute runtime.

“When we were writing and recording ‘falling’, we wanted the verses to be really fun & bouncy, the chorus to be big & crisp like a bullshit FIFA song, and outro to be anthemic but tight.” — Fan Girl

The music video for the song – directed by the band and shot by Richard Clifford – recorded on a handheld camera that adds a horror-esque aesthetic, was shot across various locations in Melbourne, Australia, where the video sees Fan Girl engaging with an enigmatic monster, leading to a Scooby-Doo-like chase through the city and into the Redwood forest, where the unexpected unfolds, leaving viewers riveted.
