What I’ve Been Listening To: Allegra Neve

Australian singer-songwriter Allegra Neve’s ‘Rewind‘ is a stunning artistic expression diving deep into her psyche, displaying introspection as she confronts her insecurities regarding social anxieties.

This hauntingly honest song captures Allegra’s struggle with crippling social anxiety that dictate her actions and confidence in public situations. Allegra’s story unfolds through a visceral journey of her mind, where she battles the feeling of being under constant scrutiny and spiraling out of control when surrounded by a crowd.

“This single is about crippling social anxiety that can control what I do and when I do it”, Allegra explains. “For me, it’s like the feeling everyone’s eyes are watching and the spiralling out of control feeling I face when walking around alone in a crowd. Like time runs backwards and my thoughts are numb. Trying to look confident but melting on the inside.”

‘Rewind’ serves as a thrilling preview of Allegra’s vocals and engaging, lyricism. As Allega explores the depths of her emotions with raw vulnerability, this song is evident that Allegra is an artist unafraid to embrace the darker corners of her life and telling personal stories. To celebrate the release of the new single, Allegra Never took part in the latest series of “What I’ve Been Listening To” on Eat This Music.

Who is ALLEGRA NEVE and how did your namesake come about?

I am a teen lofi rock, alt-pop singer-songwriter trying to get my music out to the world. I love to share my music with as many people as possible while keeping true to myself.

Well, Allegra Neve is my actual name on my birth certificate so that made it easy for me!

What artists or bands are on your must-listen to list lately and why?

I always have a very different range of bands/artists on my must-listen to list! I swear sometimes it looks like I am a different person on different days.

At the moment I am loving The Strokes, Radiohead, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Dope Lemon and Lana Del Rey, but they are just a few!

I just feel like all of these different people have such amazing musicality and emotion, which is honestly what will make me fall in love with any music. Although the next day, I could choose Beddy Rays, Telenova, Rainbow Kitten Surprise and Freak Slug, still for all for the same reason I loved all the artists the day before!

When you go into the recording studio to work on new material, what are your must-haves?

Well, a good vibe is step one! I love to have a fun working environment, I feel like it makes it an easier space to work, be yourself and let out any crazy idea you may have. I love to have a guitar or piano/keyboard near me as well, to smash out any random ideas I have and to play with different melodic ideas that may come to mind.

Drums and bass are a bonus too, sometimes it’s fun to work in reverse.

Which song, or songs, of yours would you recommend to a first-time listener and why?

At the moment I only have one song released which is Rewind, so I will recommend that one for now! I think Rewind is a pretty accurate representation of me as an artist with its lo-fi rock and alt-pop vibes it has, plus the prettiness hidden behind the slacker front it initially has. I will have more music coming out very soon though, which will give people more to choose from.

Which song of someone else’s (artist or band) would you have liked to feature on and why?

Oooooo, this is a tough one! I swear, there are at least a million different songs I would have loved to feature on but I have to choose Codex by Radiohead. This is one of the most beautiful songs I have ever heard, it has so much emotion and it just makes me sit and stare into the abyss while I listen to its mesmerising melodies. It’s one of those songs that sends you to another place while you hear it, and I would have LOVED to be a part of that process.

What has led you into becoming a musician(s) and why do you keep making music?

I love playing, writing, performing and doing everything music! It is what I feel makes me who I am and I don’t know who I would be without it. Music has always inspired me, seeing other people perform and listening to other people’s music gives me a buzz that nothing else can. My goal is to make other people feel that way too. I have always loved music ever since I was little and I have always known music is what I want to do. My music is a way I can get my deepest, darkest and lightest thoughts in a form that allows me to be who I am and hopefully it resonates with other people as well.
