What I’ve Been Listening To: Miss Lucy

Miss Lucy has unveiled his debut EP, ‘Contactless’, delivering a vibrant and groove-filled six-track collection that takes you on an underwater funk journey. ‘Contactless’ is a pandemic creation, written and recorded during a remarkably productive week in 2020.

This debut EP reflects on Miss Lucy’s ability to turn isolation into inspiration, as he navigated the aftermath of a dissolved relationship. Drawing from personal experiences, Miss Lucy’s lyrics tell the story about the complexities of failed connections across five songs, offering a cathartic release of emotions he couldn’t express directly to the other person. The EP masterfully combines retro songwriting techniques with modern pop textures, drawing influence from artists like Phoenix and 070 Shake.

“Contactless is a collection of songs that were mostly about a previous relationship that fell apart just before the pandemic”, Miss Lucy says about his debut EP. “It felt extremely liberating to be able to put these emotions down on paper that I had been feeling during a time that I couldn’t express them to the actual person. And who knows, maybe they’ll never know about these songs.”

The production of the EP is a collaboration with Matt McGuffie of IVEY. Together, they transformed Miss Lucy’s home recordings into polished and captivating tracks that come alive with synth-driven electro-pop. Their regular sessions became an outlet for expression, creating a unique contrast to the EP’s theme of distance and disconnection.

Miss Lucy continues, “During 2021 Matt McGuffie and I got together every few weeks for a session and massaged out all the harsh edges of my home recordings to turn it into something listenable. It kind of felt funny in a way because seeing Matt regularly made it feel very opposite of what I’ve been trying to say on the EP, in the sense that we just got to express everything to each other almost every week.”

Miss Lucy’s EP showcases his talent as a songwriter, vocalist, and producer, with its infectious grooves and distinctive blend of retro and contemporary influences, this debut EP is a the perfect introduction into Blair’s project.

To celebrate the release of the EP, Miss Lucy took part in the latest series of “What I’ve Been Listening To” on Eat This Music.
