What I’ve Been Listening To: Mathilde Anne

As a self-proclaimed drama queen, Mathilde Anne continues to captivate with her latest single “Way Up There”, a song that offers another intriguing glimpse into the type of music she can create, which in this case is a theme of unrequited public love and the complexities of one’s position in someone’s life.

Mathilde’s newest single draws inspiration from her own exaggerated experiences during her teenage years, where she uses lyrical storytelling to create a cinematic atmosphere that transports listeners into her world. This is the type of song that is a perfect example of the way Mathilde is able to use humour to highlight the internal struggle of being infatuated with someone who may not acknowledge the same feelings in public.

Teaming up with Melbourne producer James Seymour on the track, Mathilde achieves a unique blend of “garage-funk-pop”, introspective lyrics, and the use of a synesthesia playing a significant role in her creative process to dive into her mind’s inner workings, showcasing a determination to share artistry with a wider audience.

To celebrate the release of the single, Mathilde Anne took part in the latest series of “What I’ve Been Listening To” on Eat This Music.

Who is Mathilde Anne and how did your namesake come about?

I don’t know who that bitch is but she sounds cool…

What artists or bands are on your must-listen to list lately and why?

More recently, I’m loving a whole range of local artists. We have such good music coming out of Australia. I’ve been really loving Romanie as I find her lyrics really engaging and paint such a beautiful image. My favourite song of hers atm is ‘Keep Sweet’.

Other must listen’s are Automatic, Del Water Gap, Finneas, Pomm… Ooo, Cub Sport’s new album is what gets me up in the morning!! Who Is Kumi and of course Telenova who we are supporting this weekend!!

Ooo and loving Blusher Band right now! I listen to a lot of music!!

When you go into the recording studio to work on new material, what are your must-haves?

I cannot live without these things in the studio:

– Red Doc Martens
– A large bottle of coconut water
– My spider earrings – I don’t wear them because they don’t fit under headphones, but I’m too scared to go without them, so they sit in my pocket or I put them next to me.
– A pinterest board for the song and a reference playlist that I force James (Seymour – the producer) to listen to before we start.
– A couple of apricots (I steal them from my producer’s jar, he’s always stocked up).
– A black coffee which has been forced upon me since I turned 20 – I’m a real grown up now!
– James Seymour in a Melrose Place cap.

Which song, or songs, of yours would you recommend to a first-time listener and why?

Crime Scene Cadillac because it accurately describes my mental state and I think it’s relatable. And then put my newest single Way Up There on straight after that!

Which song of someone else’s (artist or band) would you have liked to feature on and why?

At the moment it would be Jake Wesley Rogers ‘Middle of Love’ – So pissed I didn’t write this song, specifically the line “you try to run, i try to tie your shoes”

What has led you into becoming a musician(s) and why do you keep making music?

Therapy is too expensive.
