Sabrina Kennedy explores the spellbinding journey of seasons in her debut EP “Wheel of the Year”

London-based artist Sabrina Kennedy makes a powerful entrance with her debut EP, “Wheel of the Year”. The EP is inspired by the ancient Wiccan calendar, which predates our own, this four-song collection offers a mesmerising glimpse into Sabrina’s personal experiences as she traverses the seasons of her life. With a remarkable display of artistic versatility, Sabrina establishes herself as a force through each song.

One of the best songs off the EP is “Red Wine”, which showcases Sabrina’s dynamic vocals, empowered by lyrics that resonate as a drinking-to-forget anthem, but echoing the themes of the autumn equinox and Halloween, “Red Wine” merges haunting R&B and gospel elements, culminating in an explosive rock anthem. Sabrina’s red wine is a song that emerged during the dark times the world faced in lockdown. “I delved into the depths of my soul, channeling the divine feminine energy embodied by Mary Magdalene, the misunderstood whore,” Sabrina says. “‘Red Wine’ explores the intricate relationship between Mary Magdalene and Jesus – two lost souls simply trying to navigate life.”

The EP commences with the previously released single, “Puritan,” capturing the essence of the spring equinox and the ancient rituals preceding Easter. Amidst its dark, R&B-infused pop soundscape, Sabrina fearlessly proclaims, “You can burn me at the stake like a Puritan,” asserting her unwavering commitment to defending her individuality. The accompanying video pays homage to the witch trials of the 1600s and was filmed on the historic shores of King Edwards Bay in Newcastle, which witnessed some of the earliest witch trials and executions dating back to the 1650s.

Magic & Mayhem” is a buoyant pop rock track, radiates the exuberance and energy of the summer solstice. Punchy punk riffs intertwine with Sabrina’s commanding vocals, resulting in spellbinding melodies and irresistible hooks. The EP reaches its culmination with “Overflow“, which is an expansive pop ballad reminiscent of the grandeur found in the works of Sia. Representing the winter solstice, this track envelops listeners in a sonic landscape that evokes emotions as vast as the season itself.
