Australian band Vacations‘ latest single “Next Exit” was written while the four-piece band were on their first sold-out tour of the United States in early 2022 – produced by lead singer Campbell and John Velasquez, known for his work with Zella Day – “Next Exit” marks the band’s first release since their 2020 album, and showcases the their alternative production so nicely, that they were able to mixed together haunting instrumentals and lead singer Campbell’s unique, emotional vocals.
“Next Exit” explores the concept of being stuck in a loop of repetitive behaviour and feeling stagnant and unsure of the future. The song is open to interpretation, drawing parallels to the band’s navigation of COVID or personal relationships throughout time.
The accompanying music video – directed by LA-based Nicole Lipp and creative directed by Jake Johnson – is shot on 16mm film and inspired by classic cinema. “The idea sat with me for a few months, and I’d keep revisiting it, trying to see if I could interpret something new.” Campbell says about the release of the song. “There was one session where everything clicked.”
“Next Exit” sets a high bar for the band’s upcoming album, and fans can expect more haunting, emotional tracks like this one.
