MisterWives’ “Just A Girl” cover brings attention to the fight for Women’s rights

MisterWives has delivered an incendiary cover of No Doubt‘s 1995 anthem “Just A Girl,” that packs a powerful punch in today’s world, where women’s rights are under threat. The cover, which became a staple of MisterWives’ summer tour, features fan-submitted footage and clips giving viewers a glimpse of the passion and energy of their live performances.

The audio of the cover comes from the Boston show on June 24, 2022, the night when Roe v. Wade was overturned. The crushing irony of the song is not lost on anyone, as Mandy Lee, the band’s frontwoman acknowledges. She laments the fact that women have fewer rights in 2023 than they did in 1995 when No Doubt first released the song. The cover becomes a catharsis for Lee and the band, a way to channel their collective despair, fear, and rage into action.

“I never would have believed women would have less rights in 2023 than they did when Just A Girl was released in 1995.” — Mandy from MisterWives

MisterWives encourages donations to the ACLU and the National Network of Abortion Funds, while also making donations of their own. The band recognises that the fight for women’s rights is ongoing and that it requires relentless action, whether through protest, voting, or supporting organizations that provide access to abortion care.

No Doubt’s “Just A Girl” is an iconic battle cry against the oppression and inequality that women face in a male-dominated world. It is a song that has stood the test of time, and MisterWives’ cover pays homage to the original while also breathing new life into it. The band’s rendition is full of raw emotion and power, reflecting the urgency of the current moment.
