Kimbra’s evolution as an artist shines brightly through the journey of ‘A Reckoning’

Kimbra Lee Johnson hardly needs an introduction – commonly known as Kimbra – as a singer, songwriter, and actress, the artist originally from New Zealand, Kimbra has been praised for her powerful voice and innovative musical style, which mixes together elements of jazz, soul, and alternative pop. Kimbra has a career spanning more than a decade, and has established herself as one of the most talented and distinctive musicians out of the Southern Hemisphere. Kimbra’s newest album ‘A Reckoning’ is the prefect example of Kimbra continuing to captivate audiences around the world with her unique brand of soulful pop music.

The album opens with the slow-burning track “save me“, a song that showcases Kimbra’s powerful vocals and her ability to blend orchestrated musical genres seamlessly. The song sets the tone for the rest of the album, which can sort of be characterised by its eclectic mix of pop, soul, and alternative atmosphere. Throughout the 10-track album, Kimbra further showcases her versatility as a singer, by experimenting with her vocal styles and delivering powerful performances that showcase her range and emotional depth personally and professionally.

i can’t express how much this record means to me and how much YOU all mean to me for giving a damn and supporting me over the years it took me to make this!

One of the standout tracks on the album is “la type“, an upbeat ballad that showcases Kimbra’s powerful voice and her ability to convey complex emotions through bright music and flickering instrumentals. The song is one of the many examples of Kimbra’s ability to craft witty lyrics that are both insightful and thought-provoking, and the ability to create music that is both beautiful and emotionally resonant.

Another highlight of the album is “personal“, a haunting pop song that features the prominent appearance of Kimbra’s vocals alone. The song showcases Kimbra’s ability to focus solely on one aspect of herself and bring out the best in her music.

if Primal Heart was a journey toward that essential seed of what makes us human, then A Reckoning is a long, hard look at all that lives within.

Further songs like “gun” show a personal and introspective take on Kimbra’s vocal range and ability to convey raw emotion. “the way we where” is an upbeat and urban-sounding track with a driving beat and catchy underlying harmonic vocals. “new habit” is a slow and moody ballad with powerful vocals and a melody of just trying to work around new habits… I could go on and on, but maybe the rest of the album should be left up to your interpretation.

It would be an understatement to say that ‘A Reckoning’ is a triumph for Kimbra – because she has been triumphantly staking her claim as one of the best for years – and actually a testament to her skill as a musician. Her unique brand of pop music continues to captivate me, and her ability to blend different musical styles and experiment with different vocal styles sets her apart as one of the most talented musicians out there.

Kimbra’s work is top notch and I always look forward to more.

Steve
