Astræa explores the unrealistic expectations of perfection in her new single ‘Stranger’

Astræa is becoming a favourite around here on Eat This Music, and it is not hard to see why, when she continues to showcase an incredibly diverse take on the pop world. After having released ‘Scars‘ back in August, Astræa has returned with ‘Stranger‘, a song that takes a tongue-in-cheek approach to the unrealistic expectations of housewives and perfection.

Taking inspiration for the character of the music video from the likes of Betty Draper from Mad Men (or just a generic 1950s housewife), Astræa knew she wanted this set to be in the 1950s.

“It was unreal shooting the ‘Stranger’ music video in this dreamy 1950’s time capsule house,” Astræa looks back on the music video. “The whole thing was directed, produced, edited and styled by me! My character is a Betty Draper (Mad Men) inspired housewife struggling to live up to unrealistic expectations of perfection, especially when she discovered her partner has been straying and things start to unravel.”

It’s sarcastic and quirky and I had so much fun making it.” — Astræa

‘Stranger’ is an incredible, delightful song that showcases Astræa’s sophisticated ode to retro pop, with the added aesthetic that throws a nostalgic gaze in your face through the use of lots of pink, fluorescent colour. This song also features classic synthesisers, drum pads and soothing electronic textures underlying a solid story complimenting Astræa’s tightly tuned voice.

‘Stranger’ is the third single to be taken from her four-track Looking Up EP due out for release in October.
