I has been a very long time since I last covered a Jess Cornelius – of Teeth and Tongue – track on Eat This Music. In fact, the last time I covered a single from Jess Cornelius was all the way back in October 2017 when Jess released her single ‘Love and Low Self Esteem‘. So I am pleased to be able to cover her music again, and the better news is that she has announced the release of her 10-track debut album.
Coming off the release of that aforementioned debut album, titled ‘Distance‘, is the brand new single ‘Kitchen Floor‘, represented by a video that was recorded by Jess and her partner on an iPhone at 5am in Los Angeles, California, so they wouldn’t encounter any people.
Speaking on the release of the single, Jess explains that she has “a weird fascination with Hollywood Blvd,” and how it is “such a grotesque place most of the time,” however, at the time of the recording, Jess knew she would “have the chance to experience” Hollywood at its emptiest; “deserted and empty” and “it was like a different place,” Jess expresses.
“I’d been watching a lot of ‘last human on earth’ apocalypse-type films. Mostly, the concept behind the clip was to have this character just owning it.”
“There are so many things pregnant women are not ‘supposed’ be doing, like having casual sex with strangers,” Jess adds. Although there is a loneliness, too, Jess wanted to get that across in the clip, which ultimately she is in a state of friendliness with herself and the world.
‘Kitchen Floor’ is the freshest taste of what is to come off Jess’ forthcoming debut album, due out for release on July 24, and as an avid fan of hers; I cannot wait to hear more sooner rather than later.
