What I’ve Been Listening To: FLUIR

Sydney pop artist FLUIR explains why she is a fan of French vocalist Oklou, Australian duo Antony and Cleopatra, pop artist MØ, Sofi Tukker, music juggernauts Taylor Swift, Kanye West, Shaggy, Rik Rok and Spice Girls; wanting to feature on Gotye‘s ‘Somebody That I Used To Know’; and what keeps her making music in the new issue of ‘What I’ve Been Listening To’.

FLUIR’s brand new single ‘Higher Ground‘ is now out.

What is on your ‘Must Listen To’ list and why?

There are so many incredible artists out there! I try to listen to as much music as I possibly can. To help narrow it down, here’s a list of my top five new releases and why I love them:

Oklou – Friendless

Oklou is a French vocalist, producer and composer. I only came across ‘Friendless’ this week on Spotify and it instantly blew me away! The production is hauntingly beautiful overlain by smooth interchanging vocals. In a world of instant gratification, it’s a nice change to hear the song gradually build, fully exploring each dynamic. I’ve had this song on repeat all week and would highly recommend giving Oklou a listen!

Antony and Cleopatra – Why Don’t Just Call Me

I think everyone can relate to ‘why don’t you just call me’. I have a special place in my heart for dance music and this song delivers just that. It has a classic feel about it and makes you want to dance! This song is definitely worth a spin at your next house party.

MØ – Blur

I saw MØ play at the Metro Theatre in Sydney this week and she did not disappoint! I’m a huge fan of her incredible vocals and acapella-like delivery. I love the acoustic guitar throughout the song, however, it’s the chorus that really hits home for me with MØ’s lead vocals heavily backed using a vocoder.

Middle Kids – Real Thing

This song leaves me feeling nostalgic. Hannah’s vocal delivery sits perfectly in the mix and the chorus has a swing to it that you can help but get drawn into. This is my go-to road trip song at the moment. It’s perfect for singing along in the car.

Sofi Tukker – Best Friend

I first heard ‘Best Friend’ when I was out shopping and Shazamed it instantly. I love the offbeat percussive drums, driving bass and undeniably catchy vocals. I heard Sophie broke her leg on stage whilst performing at GTM so they had to cancel their remaining Australian shows. Was a trooper!

Which are your guilty pleasure songs?

I absolutely love pop music! A couple of my favourite all-time guilty pleasures are Taylor Swift ‘Bad Blood’, Kanye West ‘Gold Digger’, Shaggy, Rik Rok ‘It Wasn’t Me’ and Spice Girls ‘Wannabe’.

Which song would you like to feature on?

I would have loved to have been featured on ‘Somebody I Used To Know’ by Goyte. This is duet angst at its best!

What keeps you making music?

I love the thrill of the chase of sitting down to write and never knowing what you might come up with. Also, gratitude motivates me a lot. Being able to write and having the resources to create music is something I’m very grateful for. There are a lot of people in the world that are creative but will never have access to even a laptop.
