Merpire is the alter ego of Sydney-based multi-instrumentalist pop artist Rhiannon Atkinson-Howatt and today Merpire has released the first taste of what’s to come off her forthcoming EP – due out for release later in the year – with ‘Holding Breath’.

‘Holding Breath’ is essentially a song about “an insight into” Merpire’s “introspection and exaggeration,” speaking on the tempo and percussion of the song, Merpire also noted how the tempo matches the mood as the song switches from happy to somewhat sad in the course of the three minute and 23-second offering.
“When I write songs, I like to think of them as mini-movies. ‘Holding Breath’ is both an insight into my introspection and a violent exaggeration of what it can feel like to look for love in the same place you were hurt. I wrote the pitch-bending violins to match the ups and downs of that emotional process.”
To celebrate the release of the single, Merpire will be heading out on the road from Thursday 6 July to Friday 7 July in Sydney and Melbourne at The Oxford Art Factory Galley (with Georgia Mulligan) and Wesley Anne (with Liv Cartledge) in their respective cities.
Merpire’s ‘Holding Breath’ is due out for release on May 29 via all major digital retailers and streaming services.
