Today marks the release of Falcon Jane‘s new alternative-country LP, produced by José Contreras of By Divine Right and available through Darling Records.
Alongside the album, lead singer and songwriter Sara has released a new music video for the song “Oh My God” (OMG), following the tracks “How Dare You” and the first track on the album, “Man of Action“, OMG is an upbeat pop tune that tackles the theme of heartbreak, juxtaposing emotional lyrics with vibrant visuals. Sara describes the inspiration behind the song coming from her own experience with heartbreak. “I’ve been through my fair share of heartache and pain in my life, but one of the most awful experiences to date was losing my cat, Seabass,” Sara says about the song. “I was honestly shocked by how deep it cut. The ‘Oh my god’ and ‘Holy shit’ sentiments in the song come from the astonishment that losing a cat could hurt so damn much.”
Across Legacy’s 10 tracks, you’re getting Falcon Jane at their best, with Sara exploring the archetypical characters of country music – the drinker, the vagabond, the neglecting father, and the broken-hearted – as she presents these characters with a clarity and empathy that feels almost transgressive. These are also Sara’s stories, reflecting her rural childhood, her move to Toronto, her current life in a small working-class town, and her experiences on the road as a musician.
The accompanying music video channels a glamorous cowgirl vibe that explores deeper layers of emotion, and perhaps it is the heartbreak that inspired the song shining through, or her general awkwardness on camera. “[T]he footage didn’t feel fully celebratory,” Sara says about the music video. “Even though I’m smiling and dancing, there’s something quite eerie and dark existing in the video that no amount of editing could erase. So I leaned into it and explored the darker side of the song and the footage, uncovering the little moments of loneliness and sadness behind the sparkly dress and platform boots.”
Sara and her partner/bandmate Andrew push their sound toward the folk and country artists, with Sara’s voice resonating more powerfully than ever, enhanced by the warm, Nashville-leaning production. Legacy represents Falcon Jane’s return, recollection, reinvention, and culmination — a profound reflection that looks both forward and backward, guided by the same North Star.
