As the first peek into her musical evolution, Wififred’s ‘Want It Bad’ is a satirical jab at the music industry with a capital ‘I.’
Winifred’s ethereal vocals take center stage, weaving over the darker instrumental undertones. The high-end precision of the instrumentals mirrors Winifred’s disenchanted view of the industry. Arpeggiating strings, synths, and an electronic production to create a synergy beneath Winifred’s voice, forging a sound that’s both haunting and entrancing.
“I wrote ‘Want It Bad’ at a time when the music industry, to me, felt like one big rat race,” Winifred says about her new song. “I was feeling disenchanted and torn between my love of music and having to work in an industry that feels self-serving and transactional. I was almost embarrassed by it. I was looking around me at all these hungry artists with the same ambitions and passion as me and thinking, ‘it’s no secret how badly you all want this’, which made me ask myself, ‘How badly do I want this, and what is it exactly that I’m chasing?’”
Hailing from Townsville in Far-North-Queensland, Australia, Winifred’s vibrant pop sound made waves with her 2022 debut EP, ‘EP 1‘. Now, with ‘Want It Bad,’ she’s brought her talents to London, aiming to build a home away from home fanbase in this bustling musical landscape.
The music video for the song is a glamorous, ironic take on a music awards TV performance, shot at the Northcote Theatre in Melbourne, Australia. The visual representation of her song captures the duality of Winifred’s message, featuring choreographed on-stage sequences juxtaposed against free-flowing outdoor shots. The big lights, choreography, backing dancers, and wind machine playfully echo the industry’s excesses, while the outdoor footage brings a refreshing contrast—natural, uninhibited, and authentic.
‘Want It Bad’ is a precursor to her second EP, scheduled to be released in March 2024. With this bold new single, Winifred is making a statement, asserting her place in the industry with an undeniable blend of talent, satire, and a touch of glamour.
