Brisbane’s JUNO and their single ‘come thru‘ are a beaut. Produced by Taka Perry and band member Sam Woods, the track showcases JUNO’s signature blend of alternative pop with a funky twist, as ‘come thru’ opens with an infectious beat that immediately sets the tone for the rest of the song. The track’s groovy percussion, smooth bass, and lively synths create a colourful and vibrant soundscape that listeners can’t help but move to.
Lead vocalist Kahlia’s performance is the perfect complement to the track’s instrumentation. Her amiable vocals are rich with emotion and depth, and she effortlessly carries the song’s message of wanting a mutually supportive relationship.
The band’s lyricism shines through the song, which doubles as a therapeutic ode to relationships that are based on mutual respect and support, and it’s easy to see how the track could resonate with listeners who have experienced the same struggles.
‘come thru’ is a masterful display of JUNO’s pop sensibilities and production prowess. The track is a joyful celebration of love and support, and it’s bound to put a smile on anyone’s face. With this latest release, JUNO took the time to answer a couple of questions for Eat This Music as part of our latest “What We’ve Been Listening To” series.
Dig in and enjoy.
Who is JUNO and how did the namesake come about?
We both really wanted a band name that could also just be one of our names, so we went searching on babynames.com (lol) and stumbled on the name ‘Juno’. The meaning was something like ‘queen of the heavens/lands’ or something and I was like yaaas. I think our music and image is empowering so we both immediately felt like the name made a lot of sense.
What artists or bands are on your must-listen to list lately and why?
Kahlia – Right now I’ve been streaming Miley Cyrus and Paramore’s new albums. They’re both supreme queens and the music they’re currently making is off the charts. I’ve also been listening to a lot of spilltab because I just love everything she’s doing at the moment and her songs are so interesting and different.
Sam – I’ve been listening to a lot of Mac Miller, probably don’t need to explain why because he’s the best. My Spotify Discover Weekly has also recently graced me with an artist called ‘vlush’ – really interesting, self-proclaimed ‘white boy R&B’.
Which guilty pleasure songs are reluctant to admit to listening to?
Kahlia – Look. I won’t lie, I’ve been enjoying some old school Paris Hilton more often than I’d admit. ‘Stars Are Blind’ kinda slaps (a lot).
Which song of someone’s else’s (artist or band) would you have liked to feature on and why?
Kahlia – Oof if there ever came a time where Cosmo’s Midnight would like us to feature on ANYTHING I think I’d have a straight-up conniption.
Sam – If I could have been in the studio when ‘Ladders’ was being recorded I think my life would have been complete.
Which song, or songs, of yours would you recommend to a first-time listener and why?
We’ve just released our new single ‘come thru’ and I feel like it’s the perfect example of where our music will be sitting this year. We’ve been cooking up a lot of new tunes over the past several months and we’re excited to finally put them out there.
What led you into using music as your creative outlet, and keeps you making music?
Kahlia – We both have musical parents, so growing up in musical environments had a huge impact on us. I feel lucky that I knew from a young age that this was what I wanted to do with my life. I’ve been writing songs since the age of six, and it was such a massive moment for me when I performed my own song for an audience for the first time. Seeing people enjoy something I had created was the best feeling and I quickly became addicted to it. If I have it my way, I’ll still be doing this when I’m a little old granny.
