I’ve been eagerly waiting for the new U.S. Girls album, and it’s finally here. “Bless This Mess” is an 11-track collection that showcases the indie pop artist’s signature sound, with a mix of upbeat and contemplative tracks. The album is filled with catchy hooks, synths, and Meg Remy’s dynamic vocals.
One standout track on the album is “So Typically Now” (which was one of my favourite songs of 2022). The song begins with a catchy synth riff that sets the tone for the rest of the track. Meg’s vocals are haunting and captivating, and the chorus is infectious. The lyrics are reflective and introspective, as Meg sings about the passage of time and the inevitability of change.
However, as much as I enjoyed the album, I can’t quite put my finger on what it’s about. I’ve listened to it several times, and while the individual songs are enjoyable, I can’t seem to grasp the overarching theme or message of the album.
I reached out for comment from U.S. Girls and 4AD, but unfortunately, they weren’t interested in providing any comments.
Despite this, there are notable highlights on the album. “St. James Way” is a standout track with its catchy chorus and personal lyrics. “Pump” is a slow-burning ballad that showcases Meg’s vocal range and emotional depth, whilst collaborating with Alanna Stuart. And “Just Space For Light” is an upbeat track that combines disco beats with reflective lyrics.
While the album may lack a clear narrative or message, the individual tracks stand on their own and are enjoyable to listen to. If you’re a fan of indie pop with a retro twist, this album is worth checking out.
