After having spent three years with Australian electronic duo SAATSUMA, Melbourne’s Memphis LK has kicked off her solo project with the release of her debut single, ‘Speak Honestly‘.
While SAATSUMA announced they were going on an indefinite hiatus back in October 2018, Memphis’ Speak Honestly is essentially used as a platform for Memphis to showcase her work as an artist and music producer.
The first 38 seconds of Speak Honestly oozes with smooth repetition of digitally produced electronic (synth) beats and slow burning atmospheric instrumental keys until the opening vocals kick in, which is where Memphis sets up the rest of the duration of the single, guiding the listener through the story of self-judgement and inner-turmoil.
To coincide with the release of her debut single, Memphis has teamed up with her sister Maddy to create a music video that not only accompanies the audio aspect of the single, but also plays of the direct lyrics of the single, which “are both evocative and powerful.”
Going into detail about the music video, Maddy explains how she and Memphis “wanted to create something that was both visually pleasing and story strong.”
“The repetition of the lyric “I want you to speak honestly”, is as much a cry to self as it is to anyone else, and we wanted to explore the inner turmoil that can happen to people, artists particularly, as they try to find out who they are.”
As a fan of SAATSUMA and the music they created as a duo – especially the single ‘Floating’ – this is an artist Eat This Music will be waiting to hear more from, and hopefully soon.
Speak Honestly is the first taste of what is to come off Memphis’ forthcoming debut EP, due out for release later this year.
