Today’s delicious song of the day comes from alternative pop artist, Kat Saul. Essentially Kat Saul’s ‘Monsters‘ is a song that sees Kat explore the inner thoughts of her psyche and confronting the fears and unknowns of life… sound familiar [COVID-19]?
Eat This Music first came across Kat’s music back in 2017 when she released her single ‘Iconic‘, and subsequently covered her other single ‘Body Language‘ also in 2017, ‘Jericho‘ in 2018 and ‘Compromise‘ in 2019, respectively. So it feels good to come across this new one from the Los Angeles-based artist.
Speaking on the inspiration of ‘Monsters’, Kat explains that when you’re a little kid, you’re afraid of things like the Boogie Man, Dracula, and Zombies. “To be real, I think I’m still afraid of Zombies,” she admits, “but in my experience, growing up shifts your fears.”
“Now instead of vampires and aliens, it’s the fear of failure, mental health issues, broken relationships, childhood trauma, and all the other shit that goes in a messed-up-baggage-cocktail.” — Kat Saul on the inspiration of her single.
“All that to say,” she continues, “it turns out real life is way more terrifying than the dark.” In fact, Kat wanted to write a song that brought that uneasiness to light, because it is a transition we don’t really talk about. “I toyed with the idea for about a year before writing the concept because I wanted to make sure it felt real,” she says, “with everything that’s happened in the world this year, those fears are more prominent than ever for everyone.” Kat truly believes that we all wish we could go back to when our monsters lived under our beds… which couldn’t be further from the truth.
Kat has an amazing vocal range that continues to shine prominently in each of her releases. First coming across her music all those years ago was by change, but I am glad to have picked her up on my radar again.
