Following on from the recent release of her single ‘Fresh Out of Love’, E^ST has released a brand new single, ‘Maybe It’s Me’, a song in which she playfully admits that she may be the one to blame for her life’s failings, whether they be financial, romantic or relating to reckless and impulsive eating behaviours.
E^ST was last featured on Eat This Music in October 2019 when she released her single ‘Talk Deep’, off her debut album, ‘I’m Doing It’, which is due to be released very soon, on 12 June 2020.
‘Maybe It’s Me’ is a catchy, upbeat and unapologetically poppy power ballad that showcases the characteristically clever, frank and cheeky storytelling that E^ST has become so renowned for.
Produced with her key collaborator, Jim Eliot, who has also collaborated with the likes of Halsey, Ellie Goulding and Kylie Minogue, the beat-driven synth-pop track manages to put a light-hearted and uplifting spin on feelings of personal failure whilst retaining a touch of E^ST‘s signature millennial nihilism.
E^ST, whose real name is Melisa Bester, explains that:
‘This song is about being a hot mess in life, and starting to wonder if maybe life has nothing to do with it and you just kinda suck’. – E^ST on ‘Maybe It’s Me’
Talking about what’s behind her music more generally, E^ST explains that ‘My music’s always been driven by my emotional state‘. ‘It’s the way I express how I’m feeling, but just as often, it’s how I find out how I’m feeling’. Either way, E^ST says it ends up being ‘as raw as I can possibly make it’.
2020 is set to be a very big year for E^ST with the upcoming release of her debut album,‘I’m Doing It’. The album focuses on feelings of heartbreak, isolation and failure. It signals a huge leap forward from the 4 EPs that the 20 year old sing-songwriter has released since 2014, and an exciting new chapter in her musical career.
Talking about the upcoming album, E^ST explains that the album is not singular in mood:
‘The first half of the album is all about being a heartbroken mess as your life falls apart, and it’s wallowing in that with no effort to make sense of it.’ … ‘I mean you need to have a wallow – it’s crucial.’
A change in mood comes in the middle of the album with the aptly titled song, ‘Turn’, after which the songs take on a more upbeat and optimistic tone. E^ST explains that on the second-half of the album:
‘The songs are still dealing with sadness and heartbreak, but there’s a conscious effort to do better and be better. The album takes on an optimistic tone as I grow as a person. By the end, the album’s like: it’s ok, I’m getting by, I’m coping.”
‘Maybe It’s Me’ gives listeners yet another great taste of what’s soon to come on E^ST‘s upcoming album, which is sure to be as brilliant as it is bold.
