Sailor Beast is the moniker and music project of California-based musician Alicia Angeles and today sees the release of her brand new single ‘My Favorite Ex‘, a song that is essentially about “finding self love after going through something. The light at the end of the tunnel,” Sailor Beast explains to me about her new singe full of heavy sounds, imagery, art; it brings back memories of the first time I discovered Superorganism.
“I also had dated this actress that ghosted me the moment fame hit, and it made for amazing music on this album.”
Using Sailor Best as a platform for Alicia to showcase her
Coming off the release of her smash hit single ‘Retro Spaceship‘ back in 2016 and ‘Dear Universe‘ a month a go, the Southern California native has returned with a music so full of music, your brain will explode from how much different assortments of sounds, sights, images and context it contains within its nearly five minute long timecode.
I had the opportunity to get to know Sailor Beast over a quick Q&A. Sailor Beast is an interesting character, essentially Sailor Beeast “embodies an extension of myself, Sailor is the creator within me,” explains Alicia.
“Sounds serious, but the name actually started as a joke. I met my roomate at the time through Elle King and we were at a random bbq in Bushwick just sitting off to the side brainstorming our music alias’s.”
My Favorite Ex is the second taste of what’s to come off Sailor Beast’s debut album, due out for release soon. The album is currently in its “mastering stages now” and the process of creating it has hit Sailor Beast emotionally, “its been literally like a child, its hard to let go and finally put it out into the world.”
With the album pretty much done and My Favorite Ex now out, Sailor Best is assures she is “happy” about the new song as it “sets the tone for the rest of the album,” Which is a very eclectic album, and I’m excited about it.”
Eat This Music: Who is Sailor Beast, what is she all about, why did you want to make music?
Sailor Beast: Sailor Beast is the character I’ve created to be the face of my artistry. I produce music but also dabble in film and as I grow as an artist my goal is to create the full experience for the viewer; visual, auditoral, and emotional. I hope to start jumping back into the festival circuit and give people a full experience.

I want to make music because its the first thing I became fixated with as a child. When I was 3 years old I would endlessly give my mom the michael jackson thriller video to play daily until it broke. Then I had a blue stereo where I started recording the sounds of my backyard, and the rest is history.
What is My Favorite Ex about?
Its about finding self love after going through something. The light at the end of the tunnel. I also had dated this actress that ghosted me the moment fame hit, and it made for amazing music on this album.
How did you go about creating it? What aesthetically went into it?
I was in Los Angeles, where I reside now. In my music studio in a little pocket of LA called Mt. Washington. I created it one night alone, going through the feelings of not having that person I loved around anymore. Thats why it goes into that cinematic moment towards the end. Thats me in my romance state.
Did you have any other songs in mind for the new taste of your album?
I’m glad you asked because I honestly have gone back and forth on which songs to put on this album way too many times. But I think its finally set and at this point I’m ready it get it out so I can start pumping out some new sounds. This album was made over the span of 3 years.
How is the album coming along?
Its going well, we are in the mastering stages now and its been literally like a child, its hard to let go and finally put it out into the world. But I think its time. I’m happy My Favorite Ex is done and sets the tone for the rest of the album. Its a very eclectic album, and I’m excited about it.
What are you working on next?
I’m planning some kind of wild adventure in the desert, we will be around Coachella Valley but in a small town called Joshua Tree. I have a crazy marketing tactic planned and lets hope I don’t get arrested.
What else do you have planned in 2018?
