Thomas Keating is a singer/songwriter out of Sydney and recently he released his debut solo single ‘Begin Again’, a song that isn’t essentially about beginning again, even if the song’s title states otherwise.
Speaking on Thomas’ first single as a solo artist – having previous played within the band Good Counsel throughout much of his career, Thomas Keating explained how he had been working on the single and forthcoming album since “early 2017”.
Having already had experience within the music industry, it wasn’t different for Thomas to come to the conclusion on what his first solo single was going to be. “Just out of sentiment, it was sort of the first song I send to Gordon that sort of started this whole thing,” Thomas explains.
“At the time I wasn’t really writing for a particular purpose, except to sort of keep that part of my life going.”
Contemplating his career after Good Counsel, Thomas didn’t know if he wanted to continue making music, as Thomas himself states, he was “shit-scared” and didn’t know what to do with his life after having a music career for nearly a decade.
It was the first “time in 10 years” Thomas was “in a place” where he “wasn’t sure” what he wanted to do with his life. Begin Again is somewhat of a rejuvenation for Thomas Keating, albeit an unintentional one.
“I didn’t mean to be so direct, you know? I didn’t really think about that [Begin Again having the connotation of starting over] until it came out.”
Speaking on the creation of his debut album, Thomas explains how the album is essentially a platform for the Sydney artist to focus more on his own songwriting and guitar playing, as a classically trained guitarist.
“I started off as a guitarist and became a songwriter through playing in bands and things like that, so I sort of want to focus on that guitar playing more.”
2018 looks to be a big year for the new solo artist with a debut album on the way, a tour and many more great tunes – and hopefully a video or two – to come throughout the year. Stay tuned.
To celebrate the single, Thomas will be heading out on the road from Friday 23 March (tomorrow) at The Lass O’Gowrie in Newcastle to Saturday 31 March at The Grace Darling in Melbourne with a stop off in Sydney on Saturday 24 March at The Factory Merrickville Floor.
Thomas will be spending the nights away from home playing new material and testing his new music to fans in attendance with a “cheeky cover” in there of The Band.
