Today sees the release of Scandinavian pop artist Hanne Leland‘s new single ‘Carry On‘, a bouncy, electro-pop-focused anthem about “finding strength to move on in the midst of chaos”, explains Hanne.

I had the opportunity to ask Hanne some questions about the single – which you can here below – below.

Eat This Music: How has your 2018 been so far?

Hanne Leland: It’s been great and busy. I’ve been working in the studio a lot, and I’m really excited about these new songs we’re creating.

How does it feel to release a new single to kick off the year?

It feels both amazing and scary. I always get a little nervous when releasing new music, because I’ve kept it for myself for so long, and suddenly everyone gets to hear it and judge it. But it’s also so rewarding and fun. I love seeing and reading people’s reactions to my new songs.

What is Carry On about?

Carry On came about shortly after another horrific terror attack had taken place, and I remember having such a difficult time dealing with it, even though I wasn’t personally affected. I didn’t want to dwell on the bad stuff though, so I focused all my energy on creating something positive and powerful, and that’s how Carry On was born. It’s an uplifting song about finding the strength to move on with our lives, and stand together in unity and love, despite the chaos around us.

How did you go about creating it?

My co-writer in the studio that day started playing this really cool bass line, and I started singing on top of that. I went home that evening and wrote the lyrics for the song in my hotel room. We recorded it the next day. It was quite a short process.

Why did you want to release it?

The song has a strong message. I don’t want to release “empty pop” if you know what I mean. I just feel like there’s a lot of songs about fucking and clubbing, and I don’t feel like the world needs another one of those right now. I just wanna make stuff that matters you know? I don’t mind a good party song, but I feel like it’s right for me to release something different.

What are you working on next?

I am currently working in the studio in the UK, and I have a feeling the public may hear some of these songs in the future. I also have a remix coming out in March, and another single coming in May.

What else do you have planned in 2018?

More songwriting, recording, shooting music video, some gigging, and promo. I also plan on swimming a lot. I love being in water. I’m pretty sure I was a mermaid in my past life 😉
