Eat This Music: Tell me about the song – what is it about? How did it come about?
Kaitlyn Mann: “Get Down” is about knowing who you are, letting go, and being in the moment. I wanted a sexy, empowering song that makes you feel like you are enough. Everyone can get down and feel confident. It’s all about having a good time and feeling good.
I started writing “Get Down” with just the bass line, that’s all it was, no melody or lyrics. Just a groove in my Ableton Live software. I knew that I wanted the song to have a lot of swag and attitude. Sterling Campbell (David Bowie, Duran Duran, Cyndi Lauper, B-52’s drummer) taught me how to use Ableton Live software when I was just starting out. Sterling is incredible and he taught me so much. Then I improvised the melody on top of it and decided that it needed strong, confident lyrics to fit the song. The main hook, the vocal sampled riff, came last! I programmed the drums, synths, and everything else myself. I also recorded all of the vocals at home.
ETM: Why did you want to release it?
KM: I really wanted to put out a song that makes you want to move. I had just written my single “High” from the “Make Me Crave” album which was a much more subdued, slower vibe and wanted something with much more energy that you could dance to. My 2 new singles which will be released later this year are also more “dance-y”.
ETM: What are you working on next?
KM: I have two new songs that I am currently working on called “Irresistible” and “Money” which will be mixed by Grammy Award winning mixer, Mario J. McNulty, who I have had mix a number of tracks on my “Make Me Crave” album which I released in September 2017. He’s the best!!! I am also already working on the music video for “Get Down” which will be shot in New York City, my home town. “Get Down” has a lot of energy and attitude and I really want to capture that in the music video. There will be lots of neon lights and dancing. You might even see some of my really long hair in it
ETM: What else do you have planned in 2018?
KM: I have performances scheduled around New York City in the spring and summer. The first date is set for Friday, March 23rd at the Bandshell in Central Park. Other performance dates will be posted on my social media and website as they are set.
I am always working on writing, arranging, and producing new songs. Each song has it’s own story.
My next single release, “Irresistible”, is a song about wanting someone who you know isn’t good for you, but you can’t help but give in. The other upcoming single, “Money”, is about having wealth and fame, and the feeling of entitlement that comes with it. It’s a very egocentric, but funny song. Everyone knows someone like that.
